GirlGeek of the Week
September 2000
Robin Kane
Robin Kane has served in each position of the
tech round table: journalist, tech writer, programmer, designer,
developer. The early days of online communications saw her wearing
many hats. Kane began her Web career in 1997 as a senior producer
and content manager for a start-up city guide site, designing over
30 Websites and developing strategic content partnerships. These
days she's focused as the Executive Producer at ViewSource Media.
When did you first discover your love and/or
obsession with computers and technology?
In 1977
around age nine, when my father bought our first home computer.
It had a keyboard and hooked up to the TV. You could play Pong,
Chess, and Go AND type programs in BASIC.
How do you earn a living?
All the geeky clichés: I'm a jack of all trades,
I wear a lot of different hats, I'm juggling a lot of different
projects at once, I'm a creative problem solver, I put out a lot
of fires.
Do you consider yourself a Geek?
Only in
the sense that I love what we humans can do with technology. The
Web is not my all-consuming passion. It's a way for me to make a
living doing something I enjoy with creative people I really like.
What is your favorite Website?
Ask
Jeeves (www.askjeeves.com) - it's a great resource for finding
answers to development questions.
What do you do when you are not working?
Spend
time with my husband. Think about work. Clean house. Think about
work. Plan a vacation. Think about work...
What's
your motto?
Coleslaw
deserves a second chance.
Who
would play you in a movie about your life?
Camryn
Manheim or Kathy Najimy
What
would be the title of your autobiography?
The Web
Diva
Who
is the person you most admire?
It's a
tie between the men in my life--my husband and my father. They're
the most incredibly loving, supportive and giving people I've ever
known and the secret behind my success.
When
and where were you the happiest?
Last year,
driving along the southwest coast of Ireland looking out over the
rocky Atlantic coast.
If
you could have one super power what would it be?
The ability
to know exactly what clients and co-workers want the moment a need
arises.
